Make the Road Action Fund Endorses Kathleen Rice for Congressional District 4

Top immigrant advocacy group backs Rice in congressional race

MINEOLA, NY — Make the Road Action Fund (MRAF), the grassroots advocacy organization representing Latino communities on Long Island and New York City, today endorsed Kathleen Rice’s campaign for Congress. MRAF, the sister organization of the 14,000-member non-profit Make the Road New York, has become an increasingly important player in local elections and policy campaigns affecting Latino, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities, and their endorsement adds significant weight to the coalition of labor groups, community leaders and grassroots activists backing Rice in the race to succeed outgoing Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4).

Javier H. Valdés, co-Executive Director of the Make the Road Action Fund, said: “Our members are proud to support Kathleen Rice for the Fourth Congressional District of New York.  Ms. Rice has been a strong voice for working-class Latino, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities in Nassau County, and we know she will bring her energy, passion, and intelligence to Washington to continue to advocate for our communities in Washington on vital issues such as immigration reform and increasing the minimum wage.”

“I’m honored to receive this endorsement from an organization that works so hard to empower Latino communities in our district and across New York,” said Kathleen Rice. “The men and women at Make the Road Action Fund know how to achieve real progress in our political system – and they’ve proven they can make a difference in political campaigns and on the most significant policy challenges facing immigrant communities. Make the Road Action Fund is a preeminent Latino and immigrant advocacy organization on Long Island and I am thrilled that its members are joining our grassroots campaign. I look forward not only to campaigning with Make the Road Action Fund members, but to advocating in congress for our shared interests in social, economic, and educational justice.”

Make the Road Action Fund is the latest organization to join an increasingly diverse set of Rice supporters from organized labor, the progressive community, and local, state, and national Democrats. Rice has earned endorsements from Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall, the 165,000-member building trades councils of Nassau, Suffolk, and New York City, the NYS Council of Machinists, WFP, the NY Hotel Trades Council, the Retail Wholesale Department Store Union (RWDSU), United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW), City Employees Local 237 (Teamsters), Malverne Mayor Patricia McDonald, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, EMILY’s List, the Women’s Campaign Fund, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
